Terence Rattigan’s pair of one-act plays are deftly woven together into this intelligent, handsome drama, a kind of somber Grand Hotel of lonely and repressed lives at a British seaside hotel in the dreary off-season. David Niven and Wendy Hiller earned well-deserved Oscars for their subdued turns, as a blustery old warhorse hiding a guilty secret and the efficient hotel proprietress, respectively. Burt Lancaster is the alcoholic American whose secret affair with Hiller is complicated when his former wife (Rita Hayworth) breezes in and reopens old emotional wounds, and Deborah Kerr is a mousy woman whose secret love for Niven is shattered by scandal. Director Daniel Mann (Marty) remains true to the good manners and quiet desperation that keeps these sad souls isolated at separate tables. He gracefully floats between the two dramas and patiently allows his repressed characters to open up and reveal their true feelings in their own quiet fashion. –Sean Axmaker

Ok, let’s look at Colors.

First, the movie is about Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts’s mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won’t get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A. Colors is a landmark movie in several respects: it helped bring director Dennis Hopper back into the spotlight after years of self-induced obscurity. Its success at the box office forced Los Angeles’s gang problems into the public consciousness and prefigured the next wave of “hood” movies (Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City) by several years. Though the late-’80s milieu is a bit dated, Colors is still a vivid, absorbing film. Hopper and screenwriter Michael Schiffer give all the characters a very human dimension and go to great lengths to show gang life from both the cops’ and the gangsters’ points of view. Wisely, they stir in elements of the cop drama, buddy movie, and action genres, leavened with a bit of humor here and there, while keeping a social conscience. Duvall is excellent as always, as the sympathetic cop, and Penn brings a great deal of depth to what could be an unlikable character. Violent, unsettling, and highly recommended. –Jerry Renshaw.

I really enjoyed the performace of Robert Duvall and Robert Duvall. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Sean Penn, Robert Duvall, Maria Conchita Alonso, Randy Brooks, Grand L. Bush.

Barbara Carrera’s Natalia–the true spy of the two–is really just along for the ride. So what’s Two-Lane Blacktop - Criterion Collection all about?

Drag racing east from L.A. in a souped-up f55 Chevy are the wayward Driver and Mechanic (singer/songwriter James Taylor and the Beach Boys f Dennis Wilson, in their only acting roles), accompanied by a tagalong Girl (Laurie Bird). Along the way, they meet Warren Oates fs Pontiac GTO-driving wanderer and challenge him to a cross-country race?the prize: their cars f pink slips. Yet no summary can do justice to the existential punch of Two-Lane Blacktop. Maverick director Monte Hellman fs stripped-down narrative, gorgeous widescreen compositions, and sophisticated look at American male obsession make this one of the artistic high points of 1970s cinema, and possibly the greatest road movie ever made.

Personally, I thought James Taylor was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Warren Oates.

First, the movie is about FBI Special Agent Don Eppes recruits his mathematical genius brother Charlie to help the Bureau solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. The two brothers take on the most confounding criminal cases from a very distinctive perspective. Assisting Don at the FBI is behavioral specialist Megan Reeves and FBI agents David Sinclair and Colby Granger. Charlie’s colleagues at the University where he teaches include Dr. Larry Fleinhardt and former grad student Amita Ramanjuan, both of whom offer their math expertise to assist Charlie with the most perplexing cases. Don and Charlie’s father, Alan Eppes, is pleased to see his two sons working together, but fears their competitive nature will lead to trouble..

I really enjoyed the performace of David Krumholtz and David Krumholtz. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Rob Morrow, David Krumholtz, Judd Hirsch.
